Valentine's Day, a time-honored tradition?
It's not just in France that Valentine's Day, February 14, is considered the holiday of lovers. In many countries, couples take the opportunity to exchange sweet words and gifts as proof of their love.
As with most holidays, the origins of Valentine's Day are not certain. The majority of historians agree that the festival has its origins in the Lupercalia. The Romans celebrated the Lupercalia from February 13 to 15. The symbolism was a little different from today. It was a festival of purification, a symbol of sharing, where a goat was sacrificed in a cave to symbolize fertility. It was also given in honor of the god of flocks and shepherds, and marked the end of winter. In 494, Pope Gelas I banned this festival. He adopted Saint Valentine as the patron saint of lovers and established a day to pay tribute to him: February 14!
In the late Middle Ages, Valentine's Day became a traditional celebration in Anglo-Saxon countries. The English used to form a couple at random. The custom of "Valentinage" was born. A young girl was paired with a young man. Throughout the day, the Valentine and his sweetheart would secretly offer each other small gifts and chivalry. The custom spread to Europe with the arrival of the GIs at the end of the Second World War. But it's only since the 1980s that the holiday has really taken off in France.
But who is Saint Valentin?
Valentin de terni, better known as Saint Valentine, was a monk. He refused to submit to Emperor Claudius II the Goth. At the time, Emperor Claudius II wanted to ban marriage to prevent men from being tempted to stay with their fiancées rather than go off to war. Valentin de Terni secretly continued to marry couples in defiance of the emperor's authority. He was imprisoned! It was there that he met his jailer's daughter: Julia, a blind girl. She asked Valentin to describe the world to her. They fell in love and a miracle happened: Julia regained her sight!
News of this miracle spread far and wide. So much so that Claudius II the Goth, who had no love for Christians, decided to condemn Valentine to death. He then became a martyr and was considered Saint Valentine by Pope Gelas I, who decided to honor him every February 14.
